Wording  -The phrase is actually "loose lips sink ships," not "red lips." It originated as a World War II propaganda slogan to warn against careless talk that could give away military secrets. The phrase encouraged people to be discreet about information like troop movements or ship locations, as this could be overheard by spies and lead to disaster for the war effort.

In the 18th century, there was a myth that women were bad luck on ships. It is actually still a superstition women working on traditional ships may hear to this day. This myth may have originated from the idea that women could cause the crew to be distracted.
