Wording - Gordon Bennett is a common English phrase used to express surprise, contempt, outrage, disgust, frustration, or exasperation, and it's often used as a mild substitute for a swear word. The phrase is thought to have originated from the name of James Gordon Bennett Jr., a flamboyant American publisher and sportsman. Some theories suggest the phrase's origin stems from this Gordon Bennett pulling tablecloths from tables in a restaurant, causing diners to be splattered, hence the name becoming associated with surprise.
